Employment Background: Mal has been in service with the Ontario Provincial Police since March, 1981. He was a Provincial
Constable from 1981 – 1992 holding various positions including General Law Enforcement Duties, Criminal Investigations
and Undercover Investigator with the Drug Enforcement Branch.
From 1992 to 2002, he was assigned to Major Commercial Crime Investigations. Mal was involved in multi-jurisdictional investigations across Canada and the United States. Investigations included several involving organized crime groups. During this period he was promoted to the ranks of Detective Sergeant (1992), Det. Staff Sergeant (1997) and Detective Inspector, Deputy Director (2001).
From 2002 to 2007 he was assigned to review how security services were provided to the Provincial Government. He was responsible for developing a program to provide full service security services to the Provincial Government. At this point, he was promoted to the rank of Superintendent in the roll of Director of Security Services.
From 2007 to March, 2008, Mal was assigned as the Director of Operational Support for the Business and Financial Services Bureau. In this role, he had command of a number of areas including OPP Fleet Services.
Presently, Mal is assigned to his current role, Commander of the Fleet, Supply & Weapons Services Bureau. This new Bureau was formed this year as part of a major restructure of the OPP. The new structure recognizes the importance of the services provided by the Bureau in direct support of front-line police services across Ontario.
Educational Background: Mal has completed business courses at Georgian College, and basic/advanced police training and specialized criminal investigation training at the Ontario Police College. He completed advanced criminal investigations training at the Canadian Police College and National Security Studies at the Canadian Forces College. Mal also completed a departmental security course at the Canadian Defense Academy and FBI – LEEDA course.
Hobbies/Special Interests: Mal enjoys photography and traveling.
